A caesarean section is major abdominal surgery, and recovery requires patience, care, and a gradual return to movement. Yoga can be a beautiful part of your healing journey — but timing and approach are everything.
The Healing Timeline
The external incision typically heals within 4-6 weeks, but internal healing of the uterine scar takes 6-12 months. This is why it is essential to wait for medical clearance (usually at your 8-12 week check-up) before resuming any yoga practice beyond gentle breathwork.
Phase 1: Weeks 1-6 (Breathwork Only)
- Diaphragmatic breathing — reconnects the breath to the deep core
- Gentle pelvic floor awareness — no active engagement yet
- Ankle circles and gentle foot flexion — improves circulation
- Short walks as tolerated
Phase 2: Weeks 6-12 (Gentle Movement)
- Supported Cat-Cow — gentle spinal mobility
- Legs Up the Wall — reduces swelling and calms the nervous system
- Supported Bridge Pose — gentle glute activation
- Seated forward folds — avoid if scar feels tight
Poses to Avoid Until Fully Healed
- Any pose that creates pressure on the scar
- Deep twists
- Boat pose or any core-intensive poses
- Inversions
- Vigorous Vinyasa or Power Yoga
"Your scar is a mark of strength, not limitation. Honour it by giving your body the time and gentleness it deserves to heal completely."
