Anxiety is the body's alarm system — useful in genuine danger, but exhausting when it fires constantly. Pranayama, the yogic science of breath control, offers immediate tools to interrupt the anxiety cycle and restore calm within minutes.

Why Breathing Works for Anxiety

The breath is the only autonomic function you can consciously control. By deliberately slowing and deepening your breath, you send a direct signal to your nervous system that you are safe. This activates the vagus nerve and shifts you from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) mode.

4-7-8 Breathing (Instant Calm)

Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7 counts, exhale for 8 counts. The extended exhale is key — it activates the parasympathetic nervous system more powerfully than the inhale. Practise 4 cycles whenever anxiety spikes.

Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

This classical pranayama balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain, reducing mental chatter and emotional reactivity. Close the right nostril with your thumb, inhale through the left, then close the left and exhale through the right. Repeat for 5-10 minutes.

Bhramari (Humming Bee Breath)

The vibration created by humming on the exhale stimulates the vagus nerve and releases nitric oxide, which calms the nervous system. This is particularly effective for anxiety that manifests as racing thoughts or tension in the head and jaw.

"The breath is always available. In any moment of anxiety, you have a tool — right there, in your own body — to bring yourself back to safety."
